Carolina vs Clemson Canned Food Drive

The Long Middle School Athletic program held a Carolina vs. Clemson canned food drive this year. Jessica Mason assists the students in building a football stadium in the middle of the atrium for the two week drive. Each student brings in cans of food for their favorite team. This year donations brought in resulted in the following cans of food: Carolina 2291 Clemson 1790. All food was donated to the McCarn Food Bank, Society Hill Presbyterian Church Food for Faith, and food baskets to 50 families. Thank you to the community members, parents, students and staff at Long Middle School.

Ms. Howell Shares Her Jamaican Culture

It was a great evening enjoying the display of Jamaica's Culture last Friday! It is one of the Caribbean's most beautiful Island. An island of extraordinardary beauty, with a rich culture. The evening was filled with entertainment and information, sumptious Jamaican dishes , souvenirs, learning to speak the Jamaica creole and listening to pulsating reggae music. Here are five facts about Jamaica:
-Jamaica is the largest English speaking Island in the Carribean.
-Jamaicans drive on the left side of the road.
-Jamaica is home to the fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt.
-It is home to the world's greatest reggae artiste, Bob Marley.
-It is home to over 200 species of exotic orchids.

Ms. Oakley's English One Class Project on "The Cask of Amontillado"

Ms. Oakley’s English One class just completed a unit on “The Cask of Amontillado,” a short story written by Edgar Allen Poe. They began with an inquiry PowerPoint project on the history of Italian Carnival, including food, costumes, masks, then and now, and a study of the catacombs of Italy. Students made their own carnival masks. After reading the short story, groups completed mock police investigations using text evidence. They used this information and a little creativity to write news story scripts. Groups then filmed their “Breaking News” reports. The unit culminated with students wearing their masks and enjoying the Italian carnival treats they prepared.
